New Delhi: India faced a crushing 10-wicket defeat against the Adelaide hosts in the Border Gavaskar Trophy, marking their first such loss. This setback also dealt a blow to India's hopes of qualifying for the World Test Championship final for the third consecutive time.
Following their loss in the day-night Test, India slipped to third in the WTC standings, behind Australia and South Africa, with a PCT of 57.29%.
Rohit Sharma’s team has only three Tests left in the current WTC cycle to qualify for next year’s final, while South Africa and Australia, big favorites to make it through, still have series left against Pakistan at home and Sri Lanka away respectively.
If India wins all its remaining Tests against Australia, its PCT will increase to 64.04, a mark that Australia will not surpass even with a 2-0 series win against Sri Lanka.
India can finish above Australia with two wins and a draw, provided South Africa defeats Sri Lanka in the second Test at Gqeberha.
If India loses another Test in this series, its PCT will drop below Australia’s, and its qualification will depend on favorable results in the South Africa vs Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka vs Australia series.
