Knicks standout Jalen Brunson suffered a painful injury, appearing to be his right ankle, during the final minutes of New York's overtime defeat against the Lakers in Los Angeles on Thursday evening.

The initial X-ray of the guard’s ankle came back negative with the image showing no broken bones, sources told SNY’s NBA Insider Ian Begley reported on Friday.

However, the severity of the injury to the All-Star guard is still not publicly known at this time.

Chris Haynes reported in the early hours of Friday morning that there was "optimism" Brunson only sustained a sprained ankle.

The injury occurred with just over a minute to go in overtime when he drove to the basket before being fouled and his foot landed on Lakers guard Austin Reaves' foot causing Burnson's right ankle to roll forward.

The point guard immediately clutched his lower leg in obvious pain and stayed down for a bit before being helped to his feet.

Brunson remained in to sink two free throws to tie the game, before walking slowly and gingerly to the locker room. He did not return.

“It’s a bummer of an injury. We expect him to be out for a little bit,” forward Josh Hart said after the game.

The timing of Brunson's injury is especially unfortunate, with the Knicks about to play the second game of a grueling five-game West Coast swing.

With 20 games left in the regular season, New York is 40-22 and in third place in the Eastern Conference. They are 3.5 games ahead of the Bucks for the No. 4 seed and 4.5 games behind the Celtics for the No. 2 seed.

Brunson has played all but two games this season, averaging 26.1 points and a career-best 7.4 assists per game while averaging 35.4 minutes per contest.
